Involved in the Liquid Biopsy division of India’s first comprehensive cancer diagnostic platform - analyses specimens to isolate, enumerate CTCs and evaluate drug responses on metastatic dissemination of cancer cells.

Skills: Indirect immunofluorescence staining, cell culture techniques (seeding, passaging, thawing, cryopreservation), CTC isolation, enumeration and microscopy techniques.

  • Selected for the Oxford Strategy Challenge, which involved working alongside four other students from various academic backgrounds at Oxford University. Together, we collaborated on improving a socio-economic simulation model for a client from a socio-reform organization. Our hard work culminated in a presentation of our findings to a member of the House of Lords and the incorporation of the changes in the model (2022)

  • Shadowed flow cytometry specialist, Sally-Ann Clark at Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine and had the opportunity of doing basic hands-on flow cytometry set-up on the BD FACS Aria Fusion Cell Sorter.

     

        Key learnings from the session include general principles of flow cytometry and instrument setup, 4-way and 2-way             sorting and gating different heterogeneous populations of cells, analyzing Flow Cytometry Data, understanding                     acquisition dashboard and its functionalities (controlling the flow rate, observing event rates, etc.), recognizing when             compensating is necessary, using fluorescence spectral viewer to check for compatibility of fluorophores, etc.

        Key learnings from the experience:

        • Observed symptoms and treatment plans for multiple patients with cyclical neutropenia, hereditary angioedema, etc.
        • Learned to carry out immunological investigations and work-ups of suspected Primary Immunodeficiency patients.
        • Gained insights into the mechanisms behind many such conditions and acquired knowledge on medical tests that                  need to be carried out on patients, based on their clinical symptoms to define the immunological defect.

    Key learnings from the experience:

    • Observed the workings of instruments like singleplex or multiplex ImmunoCAP (Phadia 250) platform for allergy detection including loading various agents on the machine, setting up sample controls, knowledge of the common allergens tested, etc.
    • Learnt briefly about the workings of other instruments such as piezo-driven nano dispensing technology, fluorescent microscopy (observing Purkinje cells), LUMINEX, T-SPOT.TB test and QuantiFERON-TB test.
    • Gained insights about the daily life as a clinical immunologist in a healthcare setting.
